The following information may be of use to all of us.
Talkatone provides a free, (albeit ad supported), 4-star-rated app for the iPhone that essentially performs the same function as the OBiON app, providing free GV calling over a WiFi or 3G/4G connection. It already integrates one's contacts into the dialer. A version for Android phones will be coming out soon according to the Talkatone web site.
The developer appears extremely knowledgeable about GV and its shortcomings, particularly its exclusive use of the G711 codec which does not handle packet loss well. (This results in choppy audio. Personally, I found the call quality with the OBiON app so poor over my home WiFi link that it was unusable. In contrast, the Skype app worked perfectly over this same connection because its codec can tolerate packet losses. Google "choppy audio google voice" for more information.) Talkatone, in fact, is setting up transcoding servers to circumvent this problem with GV. Overall, the developer seems at least a year ahead of Obihai on smartphone apps for GV. Given this situation, one would think Obihai would direct OBi110 users to Talkatone's free app rather than develop its own, just as it directs users to the X-Lite softphone application for PCs and Macs. |
